What we learned from promoting a podcast in a pandemic

If you’ve ever thought about podcasting, you know results matter. Frankly, results matter in everything because that is how we determine how successful something is.

Red Shoes Inc. launched its first podcast called Sole Source in March 2020, literally at the same time the COVID-19 pandemic was forcing much of the U.S. into lockdown. It was a bold decision, but we had already planned to launch the podcast in 2020 and when the pandemic struck, it seemed like a good time to go for it. People were stuck at home, not allowed to go anywhere so the thought was they would have more time to listen to podcasts and Sole Source would be one of them.

Low and behold, ten months later, Sole Source is growing, and we are pleased with the results. We didn’t know what to expect as far as downloads and subscribers went, but we now have subscribers from all over the world that download our show on a weekly basis. We wanted to share some of the success we’ve seen with our podcast in the first ten months with all of you.

According to our podcast hosting site, BuzzSprout, our podcast Sole Source published a total of 41 weekly episodes in 2020. Our most popular episode was one of our first ones where we spoke with ABC News’ chief meteorologist, and first female chief meteorologist at a major network, Ginger Zee. She shared her story with us about battling depression, abuse, her family overcoming COVID-19 and how to have a positive outlook on life. You can catch that episode here.

Internationally, Sole Source was downloaded more than 2,000 times in 2020, but 493 of those downloads came from our local state of Wisconsin.

We learned the most popular way of listening to Sole Source for people was through Apple Podcasts, followed by our podcast website and finally Spotify and Stitcher.
